UAH now has a campus-wide subscription to Turnitin.com, a Web-based service designed to help identify and prevent instances of plagiarism. It performs automated checks for plagiarism on papers and assignments and works for almost all fields and languages. Faculty who have used Turnitin at UAH have found that the service has proven to be an effective deterrent against plagiarism. Our campus access is managed by the UAH Library. To help prospective users understand the Turnitin system better, please view the Turnitin online tour http://www.turnitin.com/static/tour/tour_master.html, which gives a guided overview of the system. The terms that apply to the University's use of the Turnitin.com service, as well as additional information about the company, are described at http://www.uah.edu/library/turnitin.
Because Turnitin maintains a database of all the papers that are turned in to their database, the UAH Administrators require all faculty using Turnitin to include a UAH Turnitin policy statement in their syllabus. Students must be informed at the beginning of the course that the instructors will be using Turnitin.
"UAH is committed to the fundamental values of preserving academic honesty as defined in the Student Handbook (7.III.A). The instructor reserves the right to utilize electronic means to help prevent plagiarism. Students agree that by taking this course all assignments are subject to submission for textual similarity review to Turnitin.com. Assignments submitted to Turnitin.com will be included as source documents in Turnitin.com's restricted access database solely for the purpose of detecting plagiarism in such documents. The terms that apply to the University's use of the Turnitin.com service, as well as additional information about the company, are described at http://www.uah.edu/library/turnitin/."
