PARTICIPATE IN HONOR THESIS RESEARCH
From senior Elizabeth Bergquist:
The goal of this research is to determine the priorities that UAH students place on activities during the first five years after graduation and to determine whether students expect to perform the activities independently or in group contexts. Although financial independence is a common measure of success after graduation, there is a wide range of activities that can contribute to a “richer” life experience. Of course, it is not just what you do with your time, but also who you do it with that also matters. This study also tries to determine how much our students plan to reach out to others in this time since not only does a sense of “connectedness” to society relate to crime rates and sense of citizenship, it can provide a source of support as we make places for ourselves.
Participants
UAH students will be recruited through departmental faculty and introductory PY classes, as well as through other mechanisms such as ChargerNet. Only standard demographic information will be gathered (gender, age, ethnicity), as well as college(s) of degree major and anticipated year and semester of graduation. If a consent form is required, it will be made available on-line.
Purposes of Study
To determine the priorities that UAH students place on activities during the first five years after graduation and to determine whether students expect to perform the activities independently or in group contexts. To determine whether allocentrism serves as a predictor for the types of activities and social contexts given priority during the first five years after graduation and to determine whether students well advanced in each given major possess a shared outlook that is defined by the value placed on participation in certain types of activities and cooperation with others during participation.
Giving Back
After completion of the survey, each participant will receive current information related to their major area(s) of study or one activity point towards completion of one introductory PY class. The information will be drawn from peer-reviewed studies and authorized databases. Information will focus on the different fields that recruit most of the recent graduates in the stated area of study, including common areas of job satisfaction, job dissatisfaction, turn-over rate, and skills that those in the work-force wished they had improved while still in college.
